Waiheke Island Rugby Club is a unique, community-based club - the only island rugby club in New Zealand. It serves a community of 9000 residents on "paradise" island in the Hauraki Gulf - a 35-minute fast ferry ride from New Zealand's biggest city and downtown Auckland. Waiheke is an island of wine, white beaches, olives, and rugby. The club's main ground at Onetangi Sports Park features the best natural playing surface of any club in Auckland - in a picturesque setting overlooking the Waiheke Golf Course. In spite of the beauty of the club's surroundings, it is very serious about its rugby and is a true community club, fielding teams from the nursery grades (Under 5s), through to the High School and First Grade Senior Team. It is also unique in a couple of other ways with the Waiheke High School team playing in the club's jerseys and supported by the club. It also has the world's only rugby club ambassador - former All Black great, Stu Wilson.
